Honeymooners, Hounds & Haymaking

July 6th, 2010

A busy month from June to July- lots happening on the farm and busy also with with guests, the family in the cottage celebrating a 40th birthday had a BBQ with lots of our meat which they said was delicious, so dry at the moment I did say the hosepipe is on hand just in case!!!

A lovely honeymoon couple staying B&B enjoyed a glorious walk up over the farm and saw some red deer and then had tea at Selworthy village in Periwinkle Cottage .

Then another couple who were an inspiration to us all,  being partially blind the husband simply did not let that stop him having a full life – they went everywhere – Glastonbury – Porlock – Lynmouth – Dunster Castle which they loved – and a trip on the steam train they said was very special, he also plays in a rock band!!! - his wife was the driver and eyes and he tape recorded all sounds, they loved birds and found all sorts on their walks from here - an amazing couple.

So very dry that we are concerned there will be enough grass for haymaking – we are cutting this week.  We went to the Puppy Show of the Minehead Harriers at the w/e as we ‘walk’ 2 puppies for them most years.  ‘Friar’ & ‘Vandal’ were last years pups now big and beautiful – Friar won Champion Hound we were proud of him – obviously eating lots of our organic meat whilst here did him well – he knows he is

The Banquet was truly scrumptious

June 16th, 2010

What an experience – 18th May - attending the BBC Best British Menu Banquet hosted by TRH’s The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.  We finally were told the venue of the event was to be held in the Bath Assembly Rooms .

Beautiful chandeliers  overhead and the scent of the summer flowers  filled the room arranged on the circular tables and also on the 5 marble fireplaces with silver candleabra a lite, the polished wood floor glowed and the cold wine flowed – getting poetic – as the occasion certainly was a feast for the senses.

Cameras were everywhere – on the balcony the chefs popped up and looked over to see how we all were enjoying thier food,  often caught on camera with a mouth full saying ” this is gorgeous” and ” chips to die for” a truly super meal .

To start , rabbit & leek turnover with piccallili – little parcels of moist marvels, then what I called a posh fish finger but it was so good – mackerel fillet  with gooseberry jelly -really had to be eaten to believe the flavours – followed by slow cooked duck with duck fat chips & gravy – THE MOST divine taste especially the little pot of duck leg pea and lettuce with a little shredded mint salad which did not get a mention on the menu, it was summer in a pot – and to finish a strawberry jelly that just ooused berryness with poached rhubarb hidden in it and a tube of lavender icecream rolled in crushed honeycombe served in a caramel tunnel.

We had a long drinks before the meal and chatted to the other farmers and producers some from Ireland and Scotland – so interesting to hear of their lives.  Then we met HRH Prince Charles and as you do,talked about spotty pigs, he is a fan of Gloucester Old Spots too.

I have to say we did enjoy the evening – which must have been a nightmare to organise – well done BBC and all the girls at Optomen TV.

Our chef Henry Herbert did not get through to the final but maybe we will get the chance to use our produce again for the programme.

Beautiful Farm Awards 2009/10

March 17th, 2010

Where have ‘Ewe’ been?  We’ve been up to London to visit the ……….

Beautiful Farm Awards.

Roger & I were thrilled to be invited to attend this prestigious lunch ceremony held in the House of Lords on March 10th – so as we had been short listed we left the farm and the lambing in our farm manager’s capable hands and made the journey.

TV chef James Martin presented the awards after a delicious lunch, we won a commended award which now sits proudly in our farm dining room .

Farming provides the beautiful views we know and love – it is this endevour that puts animals and crops in our fields making the patchwork of land that is a pleasure to see, maintaining hedgerows, rivers , woodlands and hillsides.

The Beautiful Farm Awards are about farming in harmonywith the environment, the winners are testement to what can be achieved to preserve  this important balance.

We had a super afternoon chatting to all the other farmers from all over the UK.  Oh and yes and I got a photo with James Martin !
